What is Ambiorix?
Ambiorix is a high-end footwear brand from Belgium, still manufactured in its home town of Tongeren.
History
The company was founded by Dutchman Louis Steyns, first in Verviers, before moving to Tongeren, where its factory opened in 1895. Steyns initially sold the shoes under his own name, then renamed them after Ambiorix, the Eburone king whose statue stands in the town. The Steyns family ran the business for four generations before an investment company took over; Peter Vavedin joined in 2007 and leads the company as CEO.
Products and positioning
Ambiorix makes around 100,000 pairs a year, using calfskin sourced from France or Italy. Classic shoes remain the core, while roughly a third of production is sneakers and summer shoes. The brand has also introduced a vegan shoe made from cactus leather.
Distribution
Ambiorix is sold through around 500 shops in Belgium and abroad, including four company stores in Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent and Hasselt. Its strongest export markets are Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Poland, with further sales in Japan and the United States, often through local partners.
Why it matters
Ambiorix is a rare case of a European heritage shoe maker that has kept local manufacturing while modernising its range.
