What is American Vintage?

American Vintage is a French casualwear label that began with a women's T-shirt line and has since broadened into knitwear, loungewear, accessories, a men's range and children's clothing. Despite the name, it is a French company.

History

Michaël Azoulay, born in Marseille, launched the brand in February 2005 with a collection of women's cotton tops, after an earlier knitwear label called Ana Paola. The men's line followed in 2008. In an interview with i-D in 2018 he cited his travels to the United States, which began in 2003, as inspiration. The company moved its headquarters from Marseille to Signes in the Var in 2018.

Products and positioning

The signature product is the classic brushed-cotton T-shirt with roll-up or raw-cut hems and a loose fit. The brand has expanded into sportswear influences, loungewear, accessories and, more recently, homewares and a wider children's offer.

Business model and distribution

French trade reporting describes American Vintage as a family company led by Azoulay together with his brother and sister. Distribution combines department store concessions, its own monobrand stores including outlets, wholesale, and e-commerce. Mail-order retailer La Redoute carried the brand from 2007. i-D reported in 2018 that the brand was available through about 1,000 outlets worldwide.

Why it matters

American Vintage shows how a single hero product can support a multi-category lifestyle brand without outside investors, relying on a mix of owned retail and selective wholesale partners.
