What is Bagués-Masriera?

Bagués-Masriera is a historic Barcelona jewellery house specialising in jewellery design and esmalt a foc, or fired enamel. Its flagship is at number 41 Passeig de Gràcia in the Eixample district.

History

The business traces its origins to 1839 and Josep Masriera, whose family began on Carrer de Ferran before moving to Passeig de Gràcia. The Masriera jewels became emblematic of Catalan modernisme, the local art nouveau movement. The Bagués family entered the trade in the 1940s on Carrer de Sant Pau, the relationship between the two families strengthened from the 1960s, and in 1985 the Bagués family acquired the entire Masriera archive and holdings.

Products and positioning

Many pieces are still produced from the original moulds of the modernista period, using artisanal techniques updated with recent innovations. The collections combine gold, enamel and diamonds in naturalistic and symbolic designs.

Why it matters

Bagués-Masriera is one of the few European houses still producing art nouveau jewellery from its own historical moulds, making it a reference for Barcelona's design heritage. The Masriera Museum, opened at Hotel Bagués, showcases this legacy.
