What is Crocodile?
Crocodile is a clothing label from Hong Kong, run by Crocodile Garments, a textile and garment company headquartered there and listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. It is associated with the crocodile logo and with Asian garment retail.
History
Dr Chan Shun (1917 to 1997) founded the business in 1952 as the Li Wah Man Shirt Factory, starting with dress shirts. The company exported to Japan, Singapore and other Asian countries, and was first listed in 1971 after Chan handed control to his children. In 1987 the business was sold to Lai Sun Garment, and it later became the largest garment chain in Hong Kong.
Products and positioning
Beyond dress shirts, the range expanded to womenswear and a children's line called CrocoKids. A second line, Cal-Thomas, was started in California. In 1980 the company became the sole distributor of Lacoste products in Hong Kong.
Why it matters
Crocodile is a long-standing Asian shirt and apparel name that also became known for a lengthy trademark dispute with Lacoste over the crocodile logo, which ended in a compromise in 2003.
