What is Du Pareil au Même?

Du Pareil au Même, known as DPAM, is a French children's clothing brand. Simon Benharrous, a former costume maker for theatre and film, launched its predecessor company C'Mauve in 1982. The DPAM retail brand emerged in 1990.

History

The first Paris stores opened in 1986 and the first store in Lyon followed in 1988. The company took the DPAM name and listed on the Paris stock exchange in 1995. Investment house Argos Soditic took majority control in 1998. In 1999 an agreement with Itochu placed DPAM shops in Ito Yokado stores in Japan, and in 2000 the company launched its children's shoe line and created subsidiaries in Italy and Spain.

Products and distribution

The business is organised around children's clothing, baby furniture and accessories, and children's shoes. Production was subcontracted to lower-cost countries, with many new designs released each year. At the time of the source it ran over 100 company-owned stores in France and 45 international stores in 20 countries, mostly franchised.

Why it matters

DPAM is an example of a French children's brand scaled through its own store network and franchising abroad.
