What is Evolv?
Evolv is a climbing footwear specialist from California. The brand makes technical climbing shoes and performance lifestyle products, and its home markets are the United States and Canada.
History
Evolv was founded in 2003 by Brian Chung, who served as long-time product manager. In June 2019 the Oberalp Group, owner of SALEWA, DYNAFIT, POMOCA and Wild Country, bought Evolv from BRS Outdoor Holdings, an investment platform of BRS and Co. Evolv remained headquartered in Los Angeles, with Chung staying on to oversee product, brand management and the athlete team.
Products and positioning
- Technical climbing shoes
- Performance lifestyle products
- An athlete team that supports product development
Distribution
At the time of the acquisition, Oberalp set out plans to invest in Evolv's growth in the US and Canada and to use its international distribution network to expand the brand into Europe and Asia.
Why it matters
The deal gave a European mountain sports group a foothold in the North American climbing market, while giving a founder-led American brand access to wider international distribution. It shows how outdoor groups assemble portfolios of category specialists.
