What is Fischer?

Fischer is an Austrian winter sports equipment manufacturer based in Ried im Innkreis, Upper Austria. According to Wikipedia, its range covers Nordic and alpine skis, boots, bindings and bags, as well as ice hockey sticks, skates, pucks, blades, jerseys and protective gear, plus a clothing line.

History

The company was founded in 1924 by Josef Fischer Sr., a cartwright who initially made wagons and occasional skis. By 1938 it had about 30 employees and US sales of handmade skis reached 2,000 pairs. Fischer developed its first ski press in 1949, adopted its three triangle logo in 1958, and introduced metal skis and opened a new factory in 1964. In the early 1970s it became the world's largest ski manufacturer. A factory in Mukachevo, Ukraine, opened in 1988.

Ownership and structure

A stock buy back in 2002 made the company 100 per cent family-owned, according to the source. The tennis division was sold to Pacific Entermark GmbH in 2009. The source lists affiliates in Germany, France, Ukraine, the United States and Italy, where footwear is made in Montebelluna. It does not restate ownership for 2026, so family ownership is reported as of the source.

Why it matters

Fischer stands out among its competitors, Rossignol, Atomic, Head and Völkl, for staying independent while several rivals sit in multi brand groups. Its combination of skis and ice hockey equipment also gives it a different mix from most ski specialists. Revenue, retail channel details and technology initiatives are not described in the sources consulted and are not stated here.
