What is Fornarina?

Fornarina is an Italian brand of footwear, clothing and accessories aimed at younger women. Its current online shop lists women's footwear collections such as Bubble, Daisy, Double, Susy and Up, and notes distribution by ESSEGI SRL; the page does not say whether that company owns the brand.

History

According to an NSS Magazine history, the brand was founded in 1947 in Civitanova Marche by Gianfranco Fornari and began with footwear and Marche craftsmanship. In the 1950s and 1960s it found success with simple, colourful shoes for young buyers, and its first best seller was a high-heeled version of the wooden clog.

Stores opened in China and Hong Kong in 1986. The Nose line of unisex street-style footwear followed in 1990, Barleycorn in 1991 and the women's Up! sneaker in 1992. A first clothing line, the Fornarina Apparel Collection, came later. In 1993 the founder's son, Lino Fornari, took over leadership, while his brother Giuseppe created the Combo and Combobella streetwear lines.

Business model and distribution

The brand sold through its own stores and wholesale, with Asia an important market: the 2019 NSS article cites 91 stores in Asia. The same article says Fornarina was acquired by Bright Fame Holdings but gives no date, so the current ownership structure should be treated as reported rather than confirmed.

Why it matters

Fornarina is a notable example of an Italian regional footwear maker that grew into a youth lifestyle brand in the 1990s and found a substantial market in Asia.
