What is Furla?

Furla designs and sells handbags, small leather goods, shoes and accessories, positioned as accessible Italian luxury. Its offer is centred on colourful leather bags at prices below those of the large Italian luxury houses.

History

Aldo Furlanetto started the business in Bologna in 1927 as a wholesaler of women's accessories. His children Carlo, Paolo and Giovanna developed it into a brand with its own products and stores from the 1970s onwards. Wikipedia reports that sales more than doubled over the following years to 513 million euros in 2018. An initial public offering was discussed in the late 2010s but postponed.

In August 2024, as reported by MF Fashion, Furla entered a negotiated crisis procedure with its financial creditors and reappointed Eraldo Poletto, who had led the company in earlier periods, as chief executive, replacing Giorgio Presca. The family owners committed 25 million euros to support the turnaround. In July 2025 the specialist publication Finance Community reported that Furla had signed an agreement with its financial creditors at the end of June 2025, closing the procedure, with Poletto confirmed in his role.

Products and positioning

Furla's product range includes:

  • Handbags such as the Metropolis and 1927 lines
  • Wallets, card cases and small leather goods
  • Shoes and seasonal accessories
  • Licensed categories such as eyewear and watches

Business model and distribution

According to Wikipedia, Furla operates in about 50 countries with several hundred points of sale, split between directly operated stores, franchised shops and travel retail units, and its collections are also sold through multi-brand boutiques and department stores. The company describes its structure as omnichannel, linking stores and e-commerce.

Why it matters

Furla is a bellwether for the accessible luxury handbag segment, where growth in the 2010s was followed by pressure on margins and debt. Its family-backed restructuring shows one route for independent mid-sized brands to stabilise without selling to a larger group.
