What is Goorin Bros?
Goorin Bros is an American hat company founded in 1895 in Pittsburgh, where Cassel Goorin started out with a horse-drawn cart of hats. His sons Al and Ted, known as the Goorin Brothers, carried the business forward, and Ben Goorin, a fourth-generation family member, led the brand in the 1990s.
History
Al Goorin opened a San Francisco shop in 1947, the year the company became a California corporation. In the 1960s it introduced a water-repellent finish called Raindri, whose formula the company says remains a family secret. Goorin was the official headwear licensee of the 1960 Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley, and in the 1990s it made hats for skate brands and Thrasher Magazine.
Products and positioning
The company makes fedoras, flat caps and truckers. Its lines have also included beanies, baseball caps, ski headwear, cowboy hats, fishing gear, gloves and the sporting apparel line Grenadier, launched in 1950.
Distribution
In 2006 Goorin opened its first hat shop in more than 50 years, in San Francisco's North Beach. It then opened more than 36 neighbourhood hat shops across the United States, and also sells online.
