What is Grundéns?
Grundéns is a waterproof clothing brand that originated in Grundsund, Sweden. It is best known for professional foul weather gear for commercial fishermen and has expanded into sport fishing, wading and outdoor apparel.
History
Carl A. Grundén, the son of a fisherman, began making oilskin gear from linseed-treated cotton in 1911. The company Grundéns Regnkläder AB was founded in 1926, making capes and jackets for local fishermen. Key steps followed:
- 1930s: rubberised gear replaced oilskins
- 1950s: PVC-coated materials and the Herkules overall, introduced in 1954
- 1972: production moved to a factory in Lisbon, Portugal
- 1991: Grundéns US was founded by brothers Mike and Dave Jackson to serve North America
- 2015 onwards: sport fishing collections, a GORE-TEX collaboration and, in 2023, the first waders
Products and positioning
The range covers commercial and sport fishing outerwear, waders, men's and women's apparel, kids' clothing, boots such as the Deck Boss, and bags and accessories. Collections include Hi-Vis, Solar, Camo and GORE-TEX lines.
Why it matters
Grundéns shows how a century-old workwear specialist can translate credibility with professionals into lifestyle and recreational markets while keeping production in its own certified factory in Portugal.
