What is Haggar?
Haggar is a Dallas based menswear company specialising in trousers, alongside sports coats and vests. It is sold through major retailers in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
History
The company was founded in 1926 by Joseph Marion Haggar Sr., an immigrant from Jezzine in Lebanon. Haggar built its reputation on product innovation, including:
- Pre cuffed slacks, a major seller in the 1940s
- Wash and wear slacks in the 1950s
- 100 per cent cotton wrinkle free trousers in 1992
- Moisture wicking fabrics and self adjusting waistbands in 2002
Haggar was among the first menswear brands to advertise on national television in the 1950s and an early adopter of electronic data interchange in the 1980s. Randa Accessories acquired the company in May 2019.
Distribution
Haggar is distributed through retailers such as Macy's, Target and Belk and online, and has been available in more than 10,000 stores. The company has also produced Kenneth Cole men's apparel under licence.
Why it matters
Haggar is one of the longest established names in American men's trousers, and its history tracks the wider move of menswear toward easy care fabrics and wholesale scale.
