What is Esprit?
Esprit is a global casualwear brand that was once one of the largest fashion retailers in Europe, particularly in Germany. Founded in the United States and managed from Hong Kong and Ratingen in Germany for decades, it is today primarily a licensed brand following the collapse of its European operations in 2024.
History
Esprit was founded in 1968 in San Francisco by Susie Tompkins Buell and Doug Tompkins, who first sold clothing from a VW bus. The brand grew into an international group, Esprit Holdings, listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, with a major European operation in Ratingen.
Insolvency and change of ownership
- 2024: the Swiss, Belgian, Danish and Dutch businesses filed for bankruptcy, Esprit Europe entered insolvency in May, and the US operations filed for Chapter 7 in October
- August 2024: creditors backed a bid by the London investor Alteri, owner of CBR Fashion Group, for the brand rights of the European business; Alteri did not take over stores or staff
- January 2025: the last German Esprit stores closed
- 2025 to 2026: Esprit Holdings refocused entirely on licensing, while trading in its shares was suspended over delayed accounts
In October 2025 Cologne based Urbn Concepts became licensee for Esprit shoes, planning to bring the category back to wholesale from autumn and winter 2026. In December 2025 the chairwoman and the chief executive of Esprit Holdings announced their departure. Because rights are now split by region and category, ownership should be described with care.
Products and positioning
Esprit stands for colourful, accessible casualwear for women, men and children, with licensed categories such as shoes and accessories. Alteri has said it intends to continue Esprit as a brand in Europe, with products made and sold in Germany.
Why it matters
Esprit's collapse marked the end of one of the largest vertical fashion retailers in Germany and reshaped the market for mid market womenswear and franchise retail. Its transformation from operating company to licensed brand is a leading case study in brand monetisation after insolvency.

Is Esprit closing in Germany?
Esprit closed all its German stores by early 2025 after the European business became insolvent. The brand continues under licence, for example through Alteri in Europe and through category licensees such as Urbn Concepts for shoes.
