What is Jared?
Jared is an American jewellery retail brand, originally branded Jared The Galleria of Jewelry. It was launched in late 1993 by Nat Light, former chairman of Sterling Inc., the US subsidiary of the London-based Signet Group, which is based in Akron, Ohio.
History
Jared was conceived as a jewellery superstore. Instead of mall units, the stores were free-standing buildings near shopping malls, roughly five times the size and inventory of a typical mall jewellery store. By 1998 the chain had seven stores, in locations including Akron, Denver, Las Vegas and Orlando, and it continued to expand across the United States in the following decades.
Products and positioning
Jared sells fine jewellery such as engagement rings, wedding bands, diamond and gemstone pieces, and watches. Its larger store format allowed a wider assortment and a more service-oriented experience than traditional mall jewellers.
Distribution
The brand trades through its own stores and its e-commerce site.
Why it matters
Jared is a long-running example of a category-killer format in jewellery retail and remains one of the core banners of Signet, the largest specialist jewellery retailer group in the United States.
