What is Juan Pablo Socarrás?
Juan Pablo Socarrás is the label of the Bogotá born designer of the same name, whose family roots lie on Colombia's Caribbean coast. Its guiding line is No vendo productos, vendo historias hechas a mano: it sells handmade stories rather than products.
History
Before building his own brand, Socarrás spent nearly seven years at Artesanías de Colombia. He has worked for more than two decades with artisan communities in Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala and Peru.
Products and positioning
Collections are made from cotton, linen, alpaca and other natural fibres and feature hand embroidery and ancestral techniques. The Magdalena collection, shown at Colombiamoda 2021, was produced with 67 Colombian women artisans and included pieces made from recycled fabrics and PET. The Matilde collection for Colombiamoda 2026 presented more than 30 looks for women and men, including dresses, skirts and caftans, with footwear provided by Bata.
The brand has also moved into homeware, including a home collection with Finlandek, the fashion and home brand of Grupo Éxito.
Why it matters
Juan Pablo Socarrás shows how Latin American designers connect artisan supply chains, social projects such as Te Acompaño and runway visibility to build a craft based premium brand.
