What is Le Mont Saint Michel?
Le Mont Saint Michel is a French clothing brand launched in 1913 in Brittany, near the abbey that gives it its name. It is best known for workwear, especially the French work jacket, which it continues to produce in contemporary versions alongside knitwear.
History
The modern company brings together two histories. In 1920 Caroline Lesaffre founded the knitting company Les Tricotages de l'Aa in Wizernes, in the Pas-de-Calais, which ran a factory and a school for young women whose male relatives had not returned from the First World War. In 1964 her grandson Patrice Milan took over and modernised production with high performance knitting machines. The company manufactured for designers including agnès b., Gérard Darel and Joseph.
In 1998 Alexandre Milan succeeded his father, acquired the Le Mont Saint Michel name, merged the two companies and relaunched the brand under that name.
