What is Lindex?
Lindex is a Swedish fashion retailer based in Gothenburg. It sells clothing for women and children as well as lingerie, and operates its own stores in the Nordic region and beyond, supplemented by online shopping. It is the main business of Lindex Group.
History
The company dates to 1954, when Ingemar Boman and Bengt Rosell opened a lingerie store called Fynd in Alingsås, Sweden. The Lindex name followed after the Gothenburg company of that name was acquired. In December 2007 the Finnish retailer Stockmann acquired Lindex, which at the time had 331 outlets in the Nordic region and the Baltic states.
In 2020 Stockmann applied for corporate restructuring during the COVID-19 pandemic, and its restructuring plan took effect in December 2020. Lindex Group plc is listed on Nasdaq Helsinki. The exact relationship between Stockmann and Lindex Group today was not fully confirmed in the sources used for this profile.
Business model and distribution
Public reference sources describe about 480 stores in 18 markets, including franchised stores, plus online shopping. Online sales began in Sweden in 2007, followed by Finland in 2010 and Norway and the wider EU in 2011.
- Own stores: the core of the business, centred on the Nordic countries
- Franchise: franchised stores operate in additional markets
- E-commerce: available in Sweden since 2007
- Loyalty: the Lindex Club card scheme, introduced in the 1990s
Products and positioning
Lindex has developed a femtech offer under a separate label, with period underwear, menopause clothing and maternity and postpartum products. This builds on its lingerie roots and its focus on women customers.
Why it matters
Lindex is one of the largest fashion chains in the Nordic region, and its history shows how a Swedish retailer became part of a Finnish department store group and then a listed company in its own right.
