What is Mey?

Mey (Mey GmbH & Co. KG) is a German maker of underwear, nightwear, loungewear and lingerie for women and men. The company is based in Albstadt on the Swabian Jura and is wholly owned by the Mey family. It is known for high quality basics and for manufacturing much of its range itself.

History

Franz Mey started a contract knitting business in 1928. In 1948 the partnership Gebrüder Mey OHG was formed with Karl Mey. In the early 1960s the company decided to sell through specialist retailers, which remains its core channel. Men's underwear was added in 1984, the Meynight nightwear line in 2002 and lingerie in 2007. The company has been led by successive generations of the family; German Wikipedia lists Matthias, Florian and Markus Mey among the current family members.

One of Mey's best known innovations is the Mey-Rand, an edge introduced in 1978 to prevent visible lines under clothing. The company also runs a sewing machine museum in Lautlingen.

Products and positioning

Mey sits in the premium segment of everyday intimate apparel. Its assortment includes:

  • Women's and men's underwear and undershirts
  • Nightwear and loungewear
  • Lingerie and bras

Business model and distribution

According to the company's 2024 CR report, about 66 percent of products are made in its own plants in Germany, Portugal and Hungary, including Albstadt-Lautlingen, Celorico da Beira and Veresegyház. Logistics are handled in Bitz and Dormettingen. Mey sells mainly through specialist retailers, complemented by its own e-commerce, a mobile app and factory outlets.

Why it matters

Mey is one of the few European underwear brands that still manufactures a large share of its products in its own factories. That vertical model, combined with family ownership and a long standing commitment to specialist retail, makes it a benchmark for quality focused brands in the German market.
