What is Michael Kors Collection?
Michael Kors Collection is the signature line of the Michael Kors brand, shown on the New York runway and positioned above the more accessible MICHAEL Michael Kors line and Michael Kors Mens. It covers luxury ready-to-wear, handbags, footwear and accessories with a polished, jet-set take on American sportswear.
History
Designer Michael Kors launched his womenswear label in 1981 at Bergdorf Goodman in New York. The business grew into a global lifestyle brand, and its parent company, listed in New York, was renamed Capri Holdings in January 2019 after it acquired Versace to sit alongside Jimmy Choo. Kors remains chief creative officer of the brand.
A planned takeover of Capri by Tapestry was abandoned in 2024 after US competition authorities challenged it. In 2025 Capri sold Versace to Prada Group, and Capri now describes itself as a group consisting of Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo.
Products and positioning
The Collection line is the luxury tier of the brand architecture and shapes its image. It includes:
- Runway womenswear and selected menswear
- Luxury handbags and small leather goods
- Footwear
- Accessories, with watches, jewellery, eyewear and fragrance offered across the wider brand, partly under licence
Business model and distribution
Collection pieces are sold in Michael Kors flagship stores, on the brand's website and through selected luxury department stores. The wider Michael Kors business relies on a mix of its own retail and outlet stores, wholesale to department stores, e-commerce and licensing for categories such as fragrance and eyewear.
Why it matters
Michael Kors Collection illustrates the classic American tiered brand model, in which a runway line builds desirability for a much larger accessible luxury business. Following the failed Tapestry merger and the sale of Versace, the performance of Michael Kors is central to the strategy of Capri Holdings.
