What is Mykita?
Mykita describes itself as a design house for pioneering eyewear, combining patented engineering with specialised craftsmanship. All frames are hand-assembled at Mykita Haus in Berlin, the company's combined headquarters and manufactory in the historic Pelikan-Haus in Kreuzberg, where it moved in 2014.
History
Mykita was founded in 2003 by Moritz Krüger, Philipp Haffmans, Daniel Haffmans and Harald Gottschling. Philipp Haffmans and Gottschling had previously co-founded ic! berlin. Three co-founders left in 2015, leaving Krüger as CEO and creative director. In 2024 Thélios, the LVMH eyewear company, took a minority stake.
Products and positioning
Mykita competes at the top end of independent designer eyewear. Its collections include:
- NO1, a hingeless stainless steel collection
- Lite, Lessrim and Decades lines
- Acetate frames and MYLON frames
- Polarised sun lenses and collaborations
Collaborations have included Bernhard Willhelm, Moncler, Leica, Monocle, 032c, OAMC and, in 2025, Rimowa.
Mykita and technology
In 2010 Mykita introduced MYLON, a polyamide material used to produce frames by selective laser sintering, an additive manufacturing process that allows frames to be made individually without moulds and recycles unused powder. Its steel frames rely on patented screwless hinge designs.
Business model and distribution
Mykita sells mainly through independent opticians and selected retailers, and says its products are available online and in shops in more than 100 countries. It also operates its own shops in cities such as Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, New York, Tokyo, Osaka and Bangkok, which present the full collection and offer optical services alongside the wholesale network.
Why it matters
Mykita shows that eyewear can still be manufactured at scale in a European capital with vertically integrated design and production. LVMH's minority investment signals the value large groups place on independent technical expertise in eyewear.
