What is Patrick de Pádua?
Patrick de Pádua is the eponymous ready-to-wear label of a designer born in Vaduz, Liechtenstein, who moved to Portugal in 2000 and studied fashion design at the Modatex school in Lisbon, graduating in 2014. The label is based in Lisbon and has become one of the recognised names of the Portuguese fashion week circuit.
History
ModaLisboa selected the designer for its New Blood platform in March 2014. Through ModaLisboa's partnership with FashionClash, he represented Portugal at the Modefestival in Maastricht in June 2015 and received an award there, and in March 2016 the New Blood jury chose him to show his collections each season. Time Out Lisboa named Patrick de Pádua its brand of the year in January 2017, and the label opened its first store, which doubles as the designer's atelier, on Alameda in Lisbon in late 2017.
Products and positioning
The designer describes his clothes as fundamentally street, with silhouettes that are often oversized. Collections for men and women are largely unisex and draw on sportswear, military references and traditional details, often in black, white and green. Pieces have included coats with coloured zips, camouflage garments and coats made from recycled rabbit fur.
Why it matters
Patrick de Pádua is an example of how the ModaLisboa platform has helped young designers in Portugal move from showcase to a standalone retail presence.
