What is Prairie Underground?
Prairie Underground is an independent womenswear brand from Seattle. It was set up by two friends who grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska, Camilla Eckersley and Davora Lindner, and has built its identity around considered materials and a distinctly Pacific Northwest point of view.
History
Lindner settled in Seattle's First Hill neighbourhood in the summer of 2004, after Eckersley had proposed starting a clothing line in the city. The first Prairie Underground line launched in spring 2005. By 2017 the label had reached its 50th collection, a milestone for a small regional fashion business.
Products and positioning
The brand's founding principles included domestically sourced fabrics, organic textiles and sustainable options such as hemp. Its 50th collection centred on jackets, including the Brocade Spencer Jacket, the Velvet Co-op Jacket and the Subtext Jacket, worked in brocade, corduroy and rich colours.
- Womenswear with an emphasis on outerwear and layering
- Organic and domestic textiles as a founding principle
- Deadstock fabric, leftover material from mass producers, sourced locally in Seattle
Why it matters
Prairie Underground is an example of a long-running independent label that has kept material choices at the centre of its design process, using deadstock and organic fibres well before these became common talking points across the wider industry.
