What is J Brand?

J Brand is a premium denim brand from Los Angeles. It was co-founded in 2004 by Jeff Rudes and became part of the Japanese group Fast Retailing, owner of Uniqlo and Theory.

History

The label officially launched in 2005 at the Ron Herman Melrose Denim Bar in Los Angeles. It began with women's denim only and later expanded into menswear and ready-to-wear. In late 2012 Fast Retailing announced the acquisition of an 80 per cent stake in the company.

In November 2020 Fast Retailing restructured the brand. From the Summer 2021 collection, J Brand moved to selected direct-to-consumer channels operated by Fast Retailing, with its Los Angeles Jeans Innovation Center continuing to support denim development and production, and the brand linked to the group's LifeWear concept.

Products and positioning

  • Women's and men's jeans
  • Ready-to-wear
  • The Houlihan Cargo Pant, which sold more than 300,000 pairs

J Brand has collaborated with designers including Christopher Kane, Simone Rocha and Proenza Schouler.

Why it matters

J Brand is a reference case for the Los Angeles premium denim boom and for how a global retailer integrates an acquired niche label into its own distribution.
