What is Rachel Trevor-Morgan?
Rachel Trevor-Morgan is a London milliner and the label that bears her name. Born in Stourbridge in the West Midlands, she moved to London at 19 to learn millinery, apprenticed for three years with milliner Graham Smith and worked with Philip Somerville from 1988 to 1990.
History
She founded her business in 1990, first selling designs at a market near St Martin-in-the-Fields Church. In 1992 she moved into a 17th century studio in St James's, where her hats are still dyed and made. Between 2006 and 2012 she made around 60 hats for Queen Elizabeth II, the first worn at the Queen's 80th birthday service at St Paul's Cathedral. She was granted a Royal Warrant in 2014, which lasted until the Queen's death in 2022.
Products and positioning
The label works in the bespoke end of British millinery, creating hats for private clients as well as for London retailers such as Fortnum & Mason. Her hats have also been worn by Catherine, Princess of Wales.
Why it matters
Rachel Trevor-Morgan is one of the best known names in British occasion millinery, a craft closely tied to events such as Royal Ascot and royal ceremonies, and an example of a small atelier business built on royal and private commissions.
