What is René Caovilla?

René Caovilla is an Italian label specialising in luxurious evening footwear. Its signature is shoes embellished with crystals and jewel-like detail, together with a smaller handbag line.

History

Footwear Magazine reports that Edoardo Caovilla established the workshop in 1923 in Fiesso d'Artico, near Venice, and that the headquarters and factory are still there as of February 2024. Wikipedia describes Edoardo as a shoemaker who studied under Luigi Voltan. His son René Caovilla took over the family business in the early 1960s, and the brand now bears his name. René's wife Paola handles public relations and oversees the handbag line, and their son, also named Edoardo, is listed as creative director.

Products and positioning

Well-known items include the Cleo sandal, invented in 1969, along with Chandelier and Margot models and platforms set with Swarovski crystals. A directory notes that the company began making what it calls jewel shoes under the René Caovilla name in 2000.

Business model and distribution

The brand sells through its own Salon Boutiques and high-end retailers. The first boutique opened on Via Bagutta in Milan, and later locations are listed in cities including Rome, Paris, London, Dubai and Tokyo. It has also stocked Neiman Marcus and had a shoe counter at Harrods from 2007. Footwear Magazine noted that the brand might explore e-commerce as part of its plans.

Ownership

The sources consulted do not state a current owner, so none is named here.

Why it matters

René Caovilla is one of the few remaining family workshops in the Riviera del Brenta shoemaking district, and its crystal-covered evening shoes have defined a distinct niche in luxury footwear.
