What is Roberta di Camerino?
Roberta di Camerino is an Italian luxury fashion house founded in Venice, described as the only major Italian fashion brand based in the historic seafaring city. It is best known for velvet handbags.
History
Founder Giuliana Camerino, born Giuliana Coen in Venice, began designing handbags for a leather goods shop in Switzerland after her family fled there in 1943. Returning to Italy, she founded the house in 1945, naming it after the film Roberta. In 1980 she closed the fashion house to concentrate on licensing; the label was revived in 1996. In 2008 it was acquired by Sixty Group, which ended several licences to focus on luxury handbags. Camerino died in Venice in 2010.
