What is Sport Zone?
Sport Zone is a sports goods retailer from Portugal, headquartered in Matosinhos in the Porto area. It sells sports clothing, footwear and equipment through a national network of around 97 stores and online.
History
The chain was launched in 1997 by the Portuguese retail and investment group Sonae. It later became part of ISRG (Iberian Sports Retail Group). Since October 2023, JD Group has been the sole shareholder of ISRG, which operates Sport Zone alongside the JD, Size? and Sprinter banners.
Products and positioning
Sport Zone serves a broad sporting public with clothing, footwear and sports products.
Distribution
Described as the largest chain of sports stores in Portugal, the network is concentrated in its home market, with physical stores supported by an online shop. In 2017 the chain chose Lubango for its first store in Angola, its first step into that market.
Why it matters
Sport Zone shows how a domestic sports retail leader can be absorbed into a pan-European group, giving JD Group a scaled position in Portugal alongside its fashion-led sports banners.
