What is Sybilla?
Sybilla is a designer fashion brand founded by Spanish designer Sybilla Sorondo, who opened her made-to-measure workshop in Madrid in 1983 and presented her first collection the same year. Her collections went on commercial sale from 1985.
History
The brand grew into several lines, including the younger label Jocomomola, Sybilla Casa for the home and Sybilla Noche for bridal and evening wear. In 1989 it opened a store in Tokyo. In 2023 the brand and its archives passed to the newly created company Tauro Alonso, wholly controlled by the Chilean holding Hofstra, with Sybilla Sorondo remaining involved as a director.
Products and positioning
Sybilla's offer has included designer clothing, footwear, bags, knitwear and bed linen. The designer herself has more recently focused on objects for the home.
Distribution
Japan remains an important market, where the brand operates around forty points of sale, largely corners in department stores, through the Itokin group. In Latin America, Sybilla collections are sold through Falabella, including in Peru and Colombia.
Why it matters
Sybilla is one of the defining names of Spanish fashion design, and its move to Chilean ownership links a European designer heritage with Latin American retail.
