History
The Wortmann business was founded in 1967 by Horst Wortmann as Wortmann KG in Detmold. Tamaris became its flagship women's brand and the main driver of its international growth. Wortmann launched an online shop for Germany and Austria in 2012 and set up Tamaris USA Inc. in 2014 to develop the US market. In 2016 operational management passed to Jens Beinig, a nephew of the founder, according to German Wikipedia.
Products and positioning
Tamaris targets fashion-conscious women in the mid-market, translating current trends into wearable shoes with an emphasis on comfort. The range includes:
- Ankle boots, boots and Chelsea boots
- Pumps, ballerinas and loafers
- Sneakers and sandals
- Handbags and small accessories
- Clothing and jewellery
Business model and distribution
Tamaris is primarily a wholesale brand, sold through shoe retailers, department stores and multi-brand shops in more than 70 countries. Wortmann also operates own retail through Wortmann Fashion Retail, which German Wikipedia lists with 17 stores and 5 outlets. Its online shops serve more than 25 European markets, and the myTamaris programme gives registered customers loyalty benefits across these channels.
Why it matters
Tamaris is a central brand for European shoe retail and particularly for independent and multi-brand retailers in the German-speaking market. Its growth from a footwear label into a broader women's lifestyle brand shows how wholesale-led shoe companies are building direct relationships with consumers through own shops, e-commerce and loyalty programmes such as myTamaris.
