What is Tiger of Sweden?

Tiger of Sweden is a Swedish premium fashion brand for men and women. It describes itself as a Stockholm-based fashion house with a heritage in tailoring, focused on cut, shape, quality and craftsmanship. Suits remain its signature, alongside outerwear, knitwear, denim, shoes and accessories.

History

The company was founded in 1903 in Uddevalla, on Sweden's west coast, by Marcus Schwarzman and Hjalmar Nordström, originally as Schwarzman & Nordström. According to the brand, it introduced ready-to-wear tailoring to Sweden, making suits accessible beyond the wealthy. The Tiger name became the brand, and over time the company moved its base to Stockholm and added womenswear.

Tiger of Sweden became part of the Danish fashion group IC Group in the 2000s. After IC Group sold most of its other brands, Tiger of Sweden and By Malene Birger were the remaining labels in 2019, when Friheden Invest, owned by Niels Martinsen and his family and already holding 66%, offered to buy out the remaining shareholders. Linda Dauriz, chief executive from 2019, left in 2024, and board chairman Christoffer Martinsen-Konigsfeldt took on the role on an interim basis from June 2024.

Business model and distribution

Tiger of Sweden combines wholesale through department stores and menswear specialists with own flagship stores and e-commerce. Wikipedia lists flagships in cities including Stockholm, Copenhagen, London and Berlin, and a presence across Europe and North America.

Why it matters

Tiger of Sweden is one of the oldest names in Scandinavian fashion and a key reference in premium menswear tailoring in Northern Europe. Its long ownership within a family-controlled Danish group makes it an example of patient capital in a sector often dominated by private equity.
