What is Vans?
Vans is a footwear, apparel and accessories brand rooted in skateboarding, music, art and street culture. Headquartered in Costa Mesa, California, it is one of the three core brands of VF Corporation, alongside The North Face and Timberland. VF describes it as "the original action sports footwear company".
History
The company opened in 1966 as the Van Doren Rubber Company in Anaheim, founded by Paul Van Doren, James Van Doren and Gordon C. Lee, and sold shoes made on site directly to customers. Its canvas shoes with a grippy waffle sole were adopted by Southern California skateboarders. After financial difficulties in the 1980s, the founders sold the company in 1988 to McCown De Leeuw & Co. It was renamed Vans, Inc., listed on NASDAQ in 1991 and merged with VF Corporation in 2004.
Products and positioning
Vans operates in the mid-market price range. Its core is a set of long-running shoe models, including the Authentic, the Old Skool, the Sk8-Hi and the checkerboard Slip-On, supported by apparel and accessories. The brand appointed the singer SZA as artistic director in August 2025.
Business model and distribution
Vans sells through footwear and skate retailers, sporting goods chains and its own stores and e-commerce. Within VF, the brand has been under pressure: in the fourth quarter of VF's fiscal 2026, Vans revenue declined 1 per cent, although its direct-to-consumer business in the Americas returned to growth for the first time in more than four years, according to FashionUnited.
Vans and technology
Vans has a dedicated role for digital innovation and AI within design and development. In a 2025 interview with The Interline, Sean Lane, director of digital innovation and AI at Vans, described using 3D digital product creation and generative AI to help designers visualise concepts, along with internal 3D printing for prototypes. He noted that AI cannot yet simulate garment fit accurately and that 3D remains necessary for precise development work.
Why it matters
Vans is one of the best examples of a brand built on subculture credibility that became a global fashion staple. Its current turnaround is closely watched as a test of whether a heritage sneaker brand can regain momentum, and its design teams offer a practical view of how AI and 3D are entering footwear development.
