Who was Achille Maramotti?

Achille Maramotti was born in 1927 and died in 2005. He studied law at the University of Parma before turning to clothing manufacture. In 1951 he founded the business that became Max Mara in Reggio Emilia, in northern Italy, at a time when most quality womenswear was still made to measure. His idea was to produce elegant, well-cut garments in series, a model that helped establish Italian ready-to-wear as an industry.

Career

The company began as Confezioni Maramotti. In 1957, after moving to new headquarters, it adopted the Max Mara name. Under Maramotti the business developed into a group of labels aimed at different customers and price points, while Max Mara remained the flagship. Over time the group has spawned around 35 labels, including:

  • Max Mara, the main line
  • Sportmax
  • Weekend Max Mara
  • Marella
  • iBlues
  • Marina Rinaldi, established in 1980

The group has remained in family hands. After Achille Maramotti's death, his children continued the business, with Luigi Maramotti serving as chairman. As of October 2024 the fashion house operated 502 stores in 69 countries.

Influence on the fashion business

Maramotti's approach combined industrial efficiency with an emphasis on fabric, cut and quality, an approach that became a defining feature of Italian fashion manufacturing. The multi-label structure he built allowed the company to address several segments without diluting the flagship, a strategy later used by many fashion groups. Max Mara is also known for long-term collaborations with photographers and designers, and its outerwear, especially coats, became a signature category.

Maramotti was also a major collector of contemporary art. After his death, the collection was opened to the public as Collezione Maramotti in Reggio Emilia. It holds several hundred works dating from 1945 to the present and administers the Max Mara Art Prize for Women, which supports female artists through residencies and solo exhibitions.

Why it matters

Achille Maramotti's legacy is a large, independent, family-owned fashion group that has grown without listing on the stock market or joining a conglomerate. For the industry, Max Mara is a reference for disciplined brand architecture, consistent product focus and the integration of manufacturing know-how into a global retail business.
