Who was Isak Andic?

Isak Andic was a Spanish businessman of Turkish origin and the founder of Mango, the Barcelona-based fashion group. Born in Istanbul on 1 October 1953, he became one of the most influential figures in Spanish retail. Alongside Inditex, Mango is the clearest example of how Spain built globally relevant fashion chains from the 1980s onwards.

Career

Andic co-founded Mango in 1984 together with his brother Nahman and the entrepreneur Enric Casi. The first shop opened on Passeig de Gràcia, one of Barcelona's best known shopping streets. According to company lore he chose the name after tasting the fruit on a trip to the Philippines.

From the start the company combined in-house design with outsourced production and a rapidly growing store network. By 2012 Mango operated in 109 countries with more than 2,500 stores, annual revenue above two billion euros and around 11,000 employees. Andic served for many years as chairman of the group, while day-to-day management passed to professional executives; by 2024 the company was led by chief executive Toni Ruiz.

Beyond Mango, Andic held board roles in Spanish business life. He sat on the board of Banco Sabadell from 2006 and was its vice chairman until 2013, chaired Spain's Family Business Institute between 2010 and 2012, and served on the international advisory board of the IESE business school.

Influence on the fashion business

Andic's model helped define the modern European high-street chain. Key elements included:

  • Design teams in Barcelona translating runway trends into affordable collections at speed
  • A mixed network of company-owned stores and franchises that allowed fast international expansion
  • A strong, consistent brand image built through campaigns with well-known models and actors
  • A focus on women's fashion, later broadened to men's, kids and home lines

At the time of his death Mango had nearly 2,800 stores in more than 120 markets, around 15,500 employees and 2023 revenue of 3.1 billion euros, with production outsourced rather than made in its own factories. Mango grew into a direct rival to Zara and H&M in many markets, and its expansion from a single Barcelona shop to more than 100 countries illustrates how mid-market fashion became a global business in the 1990s and 2000s.

Death and succession

Isak Andic died on 14 December 2024, aged 71, after a fall during a hike in the mountains near Barcelona. Mango's chief executive Toni Ruiz said his death left a huge void in the company. Ownership has since remained with the founding family, while the management team led by Ruiz continues to run the business.

Why it matters

Andic is one of a small group of founders who shaped affordable fashion retail as it exists today. His decisions on vertical design, franchising and brand building turned a Barcelona boutique into a household name, and Mango remains one of the reference cases for how a privately held European retailer can compete internationally with listed giants.
