What is DESCENTE ALLTERRAIN?
DESCENTE ALLTERRAIN is a performance apparel brand of the Japanese sportswear company Descente, launched in 2012. Its guiding principle is Form Follows Function: every design element must serve a purpose, and its craftsmanship is meant to be independent of age, scene or trend.
Mizusawa Down
The brand's signature product is the Mizusawa Down jacket, developed since 2008. To stop water seeping in through seams, its designers removed seams from the down pack, bonded the shell thermally and taped the seams that have to be sewn, such as the sleeves. The jacket is produced at the DESCENTE APPAREL Mizusawa factory in Oshu, Iwate Prefecture, northern Japan, a town formerly called Mizusawa, and helped establish the brand internationally.
Products and positioning
Besides the core ALLTERRAIN line and Mizusawa Down, the brand added ALLTERRAIN 81 and ALLTERRAIN I/O in 2023. Its outerwear includes technical shells such as GORE-TEX jackets, positioned at the premium end of technical urban outerwear.
Why it matters
ALLTERRAIN is a leading example of Japanese technical outerwear made domestically, where factory know-how and seam engineering become the brand story.
