What is Amapô?
Amapô, also known as Amapô Jeans, is a fashion label from Brazil, created by the stylists Carô Gold and Pitty Taliani. It is known for comfortable jeans cuts.
History
Gold and Taliani began making their clothes in 2004. The label first showed its work at Amni Hot Spot, an event for new designers, and built its reputation through fashion weeks. Around 2015 and 2016 it began using non-professional models, and later its shows featured only guests of varied body types. The name comes from pajuba, a dialect spoken by travestis, where it means woman and which Gold says has Yoruba roots.
Products and positioning
Jeans is the main material, used in dresses, sets and trousers. The label's 2024 show also featured patchwork, fringe, metallic fabrics, prints and sequins.
Why it matters
In April 2024 Amapô closed Sao Paulo Fashion Week with a show at Love Cabaret that revisited past looks to mark its 20th anniversary. It is one of the Brazilian labels most associated with an inclusive approach to casting.
