What is Atelier Tuffery?
Atelier Tuffery is a French clothing manufacturer from Florac in the Cévennes, regarded as the oldest jeans maker in France. The family business makes its products in France and holds the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant label.
History
Célestin Tuffery founded the tailoring workshop in 1892 at the age of 17. In 1938 his son Alphonse recognised the potential of Nîmes fabric, the cloth behind denim, and the workshop began making work trousers from it. By 1960 it employed up to 40 seamstresses producing 500 jeans a day, trading for several decades as Tuff's. As French textile manufacturing declined from the late 1970s, the family focused on quality and made-to-measure work. In 2014 Julien Tuffery, the fourth generation, and his wife Myriam took over, restored the Atelier Tuffery name and built a network of partner workshops in France. A new workshop opened in Florac in 2017 for the 125th anniversary.
