What is Calamar?
Calamar is a German men's casual fashion label, described in trade press as a Männer-Casual-Label. The company behind it was named Calamar Sportswear GmbH in 1999, when the German trade paper Textilwirtschaft described it as a subsidiary of Stratmann KG in Rheine.
History
According to Textilwirtschaft, in May 1999 the Bültel International Fashion Group in Salzbergen took over Calamar's sales activities, with Calamar remaining independent under Bültel's umbrella. By March 2010 the Bültel group was operating the label.
Distribution
In March 2010 the group opened its first own Calamar store in the new Rathaus Galerie in Leverkusen, with a lounge corner and vintage car photographs. At that time Calamar had two other stores, in Iserlohn and Lemgo, run in cooperation with the retailer B&U Heutelbeck. Textilwirtschaft has also reported on the start of a Calamar online shop, and the brand is listed on the marketplace Zalando.
Why it matters
Calamar shows a typical German mid-market menswear route, with a wholesale-led label that gradually added own stores and an online channel.
