What is Closed?
Closed is a premium fashion brand from Hamburg known above all for high quality denim made in Italy, complemented by full ready to wear collections for women and men. The brand has been making clothing since 1978 and is operated today by Closed GmbH and Closed Direct GmbH.
Insolvency and new owners
Closed GmbH filed for insolvency on 5 August 2025, citing excessive debt and the associated financing costs, while describing its operating business as fundamentally profitable. In fiscal 2023/24 the company had revenue of about 120 million euros and a positive EBITDA, according to FashionUnited. The restructuring officer attributed the collapse to costly growth initiatives that did not pay off.
In October 2025 the insolvency administrator Stefan Denkhaus selected a bid from the Böck family, owners of Marc O'Polo, investing privately through their family office, together with Dieter Holzer, former chief executive of Marc O'Polo and Tom Tailor. Holzer became chief executive and co-shareholder. The owners said Closed and Marc O'Polo would remain separate companies without planned synergies, and that Closed would stay in Hamburg.
Products and positioning
Closed offers jeans, trousers, jackets, knitwear, shirts, dresses, bags, belts and shoes, with denim at the core. Under the new owners the brand is adding more entry level price points and replenishment programmes while retaining its denim focus, and it has launched capsules such as a cashmere collection.
Business model and distribution
- At the time of insolvency: 27 own stores, 9 franchise partner stores and 6 outlets
- Wholesale to premium fashion retailers
- Own online shop
The new owners planned to keep most stores and around 330 employees in Germany, with realistic sales targets and a return to profitability.
Why it matters
The rescue of Closed by the owners of Marc O'Polo is one of the most significant ownership changes in German premium fashion in 2025. It shows that a profitable brand can fail through financing structure, and that strategic family investors are stepping in to consolidate the market.
