What is Denime?
Denime is a Japanese reproduction denim brand founded in 1988 by Yoshiyuki Hayashi. Although technically founded in Kobe, it is closely associated with the Osaka denim boom and is one of the Osaka Five, together with Evisu, Fullcount, Studio D'Artisan and Warehouse.
History
Denime made its name with straight, fast fading jeans modelled on vintage American jeans, notably Levi's 501s from 1966, and set the tone for many later Japanese reproduction brands. Today the label operates under the direction of Warehouse & Co., another of the Osaka Five.
Products and positioning
The collection centres on faithful reproductions of 1950s and 1960s American jeans, using selvedge fabrics woven on traditional shuttle looms with Kurabo Industries. Current models include:
- Lot 220XX 1947 and 1954 models
- Lot 221 Big E and Lot 224 66 model jeans
- Lot 223 painter pants
- Pocket T-shirts and basics
Why it matters
Denime is one of the founding labels of Japanese heritage denim. Its revival under Warehouse & Co. shows how the original reproduction brands continue to supply specialist denim retailers worldwide.
