What is Drumohr?
Drumohr is one of the oldest names in knitwear. It began in 1773 in Dumfries, Scotland, under James Paterson and later traded as J.A. Robertson and Sons, a hosiery manufacturer making stockings and gloves.
History
The business moved to the Nunland farm on the road to Castle Douglas in 1805 and showed hosiery at the London Great Exhibition in 1851. A new Dumfries factory opened in the late nineteenth century. In the 1920s the Prince of Wales wore a Drumohr sweater and socks, which brought royal publicity.
During the Second World War the factory was requisitioned, and the Robertson brothers taught rivals McGeorge and Pringle their knitwear methods. The Dumfries factory closed in 2003 after overseas competition and several ownership changes.
Today
The Italian Ciocca Group bought the brand in 2006, and clothing has been made in Italy under the Drumohr name since. The range covers knitwear including socks, sweaters and wool and cashmere outerwear.
Why it matters
Drumohr is a clear example of a Scottish heritage name relaunched through Italian manufacturing.
