What is Escada?

Escada is a womenswear brand from Munich that became one of Germany's best-known luxury fashion exports in the 1980s and 1990s. It is associated with confident colour, tailoring and evening wear, and today sells ready to wear under the ESCADA and ESCADA SPORT lines.

History

Model and designer Margaretha Ley and her husband Wolfgang Ley founded the company in 1978. Escada went public in 1986, with the family keeping a majority of the voting rights, and expanded through acquisitions including a majority stake in St. John Knits in 1990 and Badgley Mischka in 1992. Escada Sport launched in 1995.

After a failed bond exchange the company filed for insolvency in 2009 and was bought by the Mittal family, with Megha Mittal as chair. In 2019 the brand was sold to Regent, a private equity firm based in Beverly Hills. A further insolvency filing followed in September 2020, after which the business reduced its German operations and retail footprint. No later change of owner has been reported.

Products and positioning

Escada's offer centres on womenswear: jackets and blazers, trousers and skirts, dresses, blouses, knitwear and cocktail wear, with a more casual ESCADA SPORT line including denim. Handbags, shoes and eyewear complement the range. Fragrances and cosmetics have been licensed since 2002, first to Wella.

Business model and distribution

At its peak the brand operated in 80 countries with around 600 points of sale (2017), combining own boutiques in cities such as Munich, London and New York with wholesale.

  • Own stores: a reduced boutique network after 2020
  • E-commerce: escada.com, serving multiple countries
  • Wholesale: department stores and retailers
  • Licensing: fragrance and beauty

Why it matters

Escada is one of the few German brands to have competed in the global luxury womenswear market. Its history of rapid growth, insolvency and repeated ownership changes is a frequently cited case of how heritage fashion brands struggle with shifting consumer tastes and financial leverage.
