What is Free People?
Free People designs and sells womenswear, accessories, shoes, intimates and swimwear, along with a beauty and wellness range. It is part of URBN, the Philadelphia group behind Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie. Its activewear line, FP Movement, is presented by URBN as a brand of its own.
History
The name goes back to the first store opened by Richard Hayne in West Philadelphia around 1970, before the business was renamed Urban Outfitters. Free People returned as a wholesale label by 1984, which is the founding date usually given for the brand. The first Free People boutique opened in Paramus, New Jersey, in 2002, and the brand later built out its own e-commerce in the mid 2000s.
Products and positioning
Free People targets young women with a romantic, relaxed and bohemian aesthetic. Key categories include:
- Dresses, tops, knitwear and denim
- Intimates and swimwear
- Footwear and accessories
- FP Movement activewear
- Beauty and wellness
Business model and distribution
Unlike its sister brands, Free People relies heavily on wholesale. Its collections are sold through around 1,400 specialty stores worldwide and through department stores, including concept shops at Nordstrom and Bloomingdale's. Alongside this it runs its own freestanding boutiques in the United States and Canada, with a flagship at Rockefeller Center in New York, and sells directly through global and UK websites. In the United Kingdom the brand has used a wholesale showroom to reach independent stores, and in Canada it also sells to independent boutiques.
Why it matters
Free People shows how a retailer-owned brand can use wholesale to reach far beyond its own store fleet while keeping a clear brand identity. The parallel growth of FP Movement also reflects the wider convergence of fashion and activewear, a shift that has shaped assortments across the mid-market.
