What is Freeman T. Porter?
Freeman T. Porter is a sportswear and jeans label for men and women, distributed in France. French trade press describes it as a sportswear jeans brand.
Ownership
The French distributor Ep6 took over the brand in 2009, with Pascal Muller as managing director. In 2015, French trade press reported that Ep6 had entered receivership and that a takeover company, DS 55, had been set up to take over the brand, with Pascal Muller remaining in charge.
Footwear licence
In May 2011 the brand licensed footwear production and distribution to Iseo, a Hong Kong-based footwear specialist with production in Asia and Portugal, for an initial term of three years starting with the Spring/Summer 2012 collection. The first collection was to include about ten men's models, such as city shoes and sneakers, plus women's ballerinas and sandals. A future sunglasses licence was also under consideration.
Distribution
In 2011 the brand had five stores in France, including a recent one in Quimper, and was about to open a sixth. The Annecy store operated on a commission affiliation basis. Fairplay handled sales in France for the footwear line, which was shown at the Bread & Butter and Who's Next trade shows.
Why it matters
The brand illustrates licensing as a route into categories outside a core business.
