What is G-SHOCK?
G-SHOCK is the shock-resistant watch line of Casio Computer, Japan. The first model, the DW-5000C-1A, went on sale in 1983. Designer Ibe Kikuo submitted the original proposal in 1981 and headed the G-SHOCK design team.
History
The team's aim was a sturdy watch that could survive being dropped. Its target was described as triple 10: surviving a 10 metre fall, resisting water to 10 bar and running on a battery for 10 years.
Products and positioning
Over the years the line has grown well beyond the original square model:

- DW-8400-1 Mudman in 1995
- MRG-100 in 1996, an all-metal midrange model
- The MR-G luxury series, priced from 300,000 yen
- A solid gold limited edition for the 35th anniversary

Why it matters
G-SHOCK turned a durability brief into a global watch category, and its range now stretches from rugged utility watches to luxury metal models.
