What is PROMASTER?
PROMASTER is Citizen's line of sports watches built for aquatic, terrestrial and high-flying pursuits. The Promaster name was first applied in 1989.
History
The line draws on earlier Citizen tool watches. The Seven Star was used by a Japanese team climbing the north face of the Eiger in 1969, and the Challenge Diver introduced a 200 m rated dive watch with a rotating bezel. The 1985 Aqualand, a quartz dive watch with an electronic depth sensor, predates the Promaster name. The original Promaster line-up included the Altichron, Aerochron and Aqualand.
Products and positioning
The dive range has grown to more than thirty models. Notable developments include:
- The Aqualand chronograph with depth display and solar power
- The 1000 m Eco-Drive Professional, tested on a submersible with JAMSTEC in 2016
- The Cyber Aqualand, used by researchers at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
Why it matters
PROMASTER is one of the longest-running Japanese sports watch lines, combining field use by climbers and scientists with Citizen's light-powered technology, and anniversary editions continue to draw on its archive.
