What is Georg Jensen?
Georg Jensen is a Danish design house best known for silver jewellery and homewares. It was named after its founder, Georg Arthur Jensen (1866 to 1935), a Danish silversmith and designer trained in goldsmithing and sculpture.
History
Jensen turned from ceramics to silver in 1901 and opened his own small silversmithy at 36 Bredgade in Copenhagen in 1904. The company opened stores in Berlin in 1909, London in 1921 and New York in 1924. The New York store was run as a family business by Frederik Lunning, according to Wikipedia.
Products and positioning
Early output was Art Nouveau silver and jewellery with organic shapes, often set with gemstones such as amber, garnet and opal. Later designs became more streamlined, and the company also made homewares.
Ownership
On 14 September 2023 Fiskars Group announced an agreement to acquire Georg Jensen Investment ApS, the parent of Georg Jensen A/S, from Investcorp for an enterprise value of EUR 151.5 million, debt free and cash free. The company said the deal would add Jewelry and Fine Silver categories to Fiskars. The press release reported revenue growth of 16 percent to DKK 1.2 billion between 2019 and 2022. The release does not state the completion date, so completion is not independently confirmed here.
Business model and distribution
The sources consulted describe stores in several international cities from the early twentieth century. A current store and wholesale breakdown is not given, so none is stated.
Why it matters
Georg Jensen is one of the best known names in Scandinavian silver design. Its move into a Nordic consumer goods group shows how heritage luxury houses are being consolidated with homewares and lifestyle brands.
