What is Hervé Léger?
Hervé Léger is a French fashion house founded in 1985 by designer Hervé Peugnet, who later worked under the name Hervé L. Leroux. The label is best known for the bandage dress, a body conscious design that Peugnet pioneered with Azzedine Alaïa. It uses strips of material traditionally found in foundation garments to shape the figure, and the pieces are knitted rather than woven.
History
The brand has changed hands several times:
- 1985: founded by Hervé Peugnet in France
- 1998: acquired by BCBG Max Azria Group from the Seagram group
- 2017: bought by Marquee Brands after BCBG Max Azria's bankruptcy, then sold to Authentic Brands Group in October 2017
Under Authentic Brands Group the label has worked with new creative directors. Christian Juul Nielsen took the role in 2018 and widened the offer beyond the bandage dress into daywear and lifestyle pieces. In 2023 Michelle Ochs, co-founder of Cushnie et Ochs, was appointed creative director.
Products and positioning
Hervé Léger remains centred on womenswear, especially figure hugging dresses for evening and occasion wear, alongside daywear introduced in recent years. The brand is sold through department stores, online and in outlet centres.
Why it matters
Hervé Léger shows how an iconic single product can sustain a fashion house through multiple ownership changes, and how brand management groups revive heritage labels through new creative leadership.
