What is Lejaby?
Lejaby is one of France's historic lingerie makers, with origins in 1884 and a production base in the Lyon region. It has also traded as Maison Lejaby.
History
In January 2012 the company was acquired by Alain Prost, a former chief executive of La Perla, who became chief executive. He repositioned the brand around French manufacturing and a more upscale identity, kept around 200 staff and partnered with a workshop near Lyon employing former Lejaby seamstresses.
Products and positioning
The house offers two levels of lingerie:
- Lejaby Couture, handmade in France from materials such as Calais lace and Lyon silk, with each piece numbered and signed by its seamstress
- Made-to-measure pieces for private clients
- A main ready-to-wear lingerie line produced by a supplier in Tunisia
Distribution
The couture collection has been sold through Printemps and Galeries Lafayette in Paris, Harrods in London and retailers in Russia. A lingerie couture salon opened in Paris near the Louvre in December 2012, offering private rooms for clients.
Why it matters
Lejaby is a case study in repositioning a heritage French lingerie name around craft, domestic production and international luxury department stores.
