What is Liz Claiborne?
Liz Claiborne is a long established American apparel brand, today owned by the department store retailer JCPenney. It is sold exclusively through JCPenney stores and the retailer's website.
History
In August 2010 JCPenney launched Liz Claiborne under an exclusive agreement as the brand's only department store in the United States and Puerto Rico. Under that arrangement Liz Claiborne designed the merchandise while JCPenney handled sourcing, merchandising and marketing. Women's and men's lines arrived in stores in August 2010, with home goods following in January 2011.
In October 2011 JCPenney agreed to acquire the brand outright from Liz Claiborne Inc. The deal included a family of related names:
- Liz Claiborne, Claiborne, Liz and Liz & Co.
- Concepts by Claiborne, LC, Elizabeth and Lizwear
- LizGolf, LizSport and Liz Claiborne New York
- Monet jewellery
The Liz Claiborne design team moved to JCPenney as part of the transaction.
Products and positioning
The brand spans about 30 categories, including womenswear, menswear, accessories and home, positioned in JCPenney's better and best price tiers.
Why it matters
Liz Claiborne is a prominent example of a former wholesale fashion brand becoming a retailer's private label, a model widely used by American department stores.
