What is Lubiam?

Lubiam is an Italian maker of tailored menswear headquartered in Mantua. The company's legal entity is LUBIAM Moda per L'Uomo S.p.A., and its website presents two brands, LBM1911 and Luigi Bianchi.

History

The company's own history states that Luigi Bianchi, who left San Michele in Bosco in the province of Mantua at 16 to learn tailoring in Turin, founded it in 1911 as the "Primaria Sartoria Luigi Bianchi". The LUBIAM name was created in 1939 as an acronym of Luigi Bianchi Mantova. In 1929 the firm adopted a Fordist production model, which helped it grow from a family workshop into a company of more than 300 employees. The head office in the Valletta Paiolo district was inaugurated in 1938. After the war the company ran large advertising campaigns on television, radio and in print, restructured in the 1990s and celebrated its centenary in 2011.

Ownership

Lubiam describes itself as one of the few Italian companies still led by its founder's family, now in its fourth generation. Giuliano Bianchi is president, and the board includes his children Edgardo, Giovanni, Giulia and Gabriele.

Business model and distribution

The company manufactures at a 35,000 square metre site on Viale Fiume in Mantua and sells through retailers and a showroom. It expanded first to the United States and then across Europe, including China and Japan. It holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certifications.

Why it matters

Lubiam is a rare example of an Italian tailoring house that has stayed in family hands for more than a century while building industrial-scale production in the Mantua area.
